WhatsApp Analytics

Track your WhatsApp messaging performance with detailed metrics, visual trend charts, and campaign-level reports. Use analytics to optimize your content, targeting, and sending strategy.

Overview

WhatsApp Analytics provides insights into your messaging activity across all connected WhatsApp channels. Monitor delivery performance, read rates, engagement trends, and message volume over time. Use these metrics to identify what is working, diagnose issues, and continuously improve your WhatsApp communication strategy.

ℹ️ Data Refresh Frequency

Analytics data is updated at regular intervals. Real-time delivery and read confirmations from Meta typically reflect within 1–5 minutes. Aggregated dashboards (daily/weekly/monthly rollups) may have a processing delay of up to 15 minutes. For near-real-time monitoring during an active campaign, use the campaign detail page, which shows live progress.

Filtering

Analytics data can be sliced and filtered to focus on specific dimensions:

  • Date Range — Predefined ranges: Today, Yesterday, Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days, This Month, Last Month, or Custom Date Range. The custom range picker supports any start/end date combination.
  • Template — Filter metrics by a specific message template. Useful for comparing which templates drive the highest read rates and engagement.
  • Campaign — Drill into metrics for an individual campaign. See per-contact delivery status, failure reasons, and response data.
  • Phone Number — If you have multiple connected WhatsApp numbers, filter analytics by phone number to compare performance across numbers.
  • Message Type — Filter by message category: Marketing, Utility, or Authentication.

Exporting Analytics Data

Analytics data can be exported for external reporting, audits, or integration with business intelligence tools:

  • CSV Export — Download raw data as a comma-separated file. The CSV includes date, template, campaign, contact count, sent, delivered, read, and failure columns for each data point.
  • Campaign Report Export — Export per-contact delivery logs for a specific campaign, including phone number, message status, sent timestamp, delivery timestamp, and read timestamp.
  • Scheduled Reports — Configure automated report delivery to email recipients at daily, weekly, or monthly intervals.
💡

Export delivery logs after every major campaign. Compare the exported CSV against your original contact list to identify invalid numbers, opted-out contacts, and delivery patterns. Use this data to clean your CRM contact lists and improve future campaign targeting.

Benchmark Metrics

Industry benchmarks provide context for evaluating your WhatsApp performance. While results vary by region and industry, the following ranges represent typical WhatsApp Business API performance:

MetricBelow AverageAverageAbove Average
Delivery Rate< 85%85–95%> 95%
Read Rate< 60%60–80%> 80%
Response Rate (within 24h)< 50%50–75%> 75%
Block/Report Rate> 1%0.1–1%< 0.1%
🚫

Pay close attention to your block and report rate, available in Meta Business Manager under WhatsApp → Account Health. If your block rate exceeds 1%, Meta may restrict your messaging capability or downgrade your phone number quality tier. High block rates are typically caused by irrelevant messaging, sending to non-opted-in contacts, or excessive frequency.

Interpreting Metrics: What the Numbers Tell You

High Delivery Rate but Low Read Rate

Diagnosis: Your messages are reaching recipients’ devices but they are not opening them.

Likely Causes:

  • The message preview (template header and first line) is not compelling.
  • The sender name is not recognized or trusted by recipients.
  • Messages are being sent at times when recipients are not checking WhatsApp.

Actionable Steps:

  • Revise your template header text. The header is the most visible element in the notification preview.
  • Ensure your WhatsApp display name matches your brand name exactly.
  • Test different sending times to find when your audience is most responsive.
  • Review your contact segments — are you sending to the right audience for this content?

Low Delivery Rate

Diagnosis: A significant portion of messages are not reaching recipients.

Likely Causes:

  • Invalid or deactivated phone numbers in your contact list.
  • Recipients have blocked your business number.
  • Phone number quality rating is low, causing Meta to throttle delivery.
  • Template rejection or policy violations triggering message blocking.

Actionable Steps:

  • Clean your contact list — remove numbers that repeatedly fail delivery.
  • Check your phone number quality rating in Meta Business Manager → WhatsApp → Account Health.
  • Reduce sending frequency to high-risk contacts.
  • Verify that your templates are approved and compliant.

High Read Rate but Low Response Rate

Diagnosis: Customers are reading your messages but not engaging further.

Likely Causes:

  • The message does not include a clear call-to-action or next step.
  • Customers received the information they need and have no reason to reply.
  • The message appears automated and impersonal.

Actionable Steps:

  • Add CTA buttons to your templates (e.g., “Shop Now”, “Track Order”, “Talk to Support”).
  • Use interactive elements like quick reply buttons to lower the barrier to engagement.
  • Test personalization — a personalized message with the customer’s name and relevant context drives higher response rates.

Sudden Drop in Delivery Rate

Diagnosis: Delivery rate was consistently high and suddenly declined.

Likely Causes:

  • A recently launched campaign contained content that recipients flagged as spam.
  • Phone number quality rating was downgraded.
  • Meta updated its messaging policy, and your templates or sending pattern no longer comply.

Actionable Steps:

  • Immediately pause all running campaigns.
  • Check your account health in Meta Business Manager for any policy warnings.
  • Review the last 2–3 campaigns for content that may have triggered negative feedback.
  • Resubmit any flagged templates and wait for quality rating recovery before resuming sends.

Comparing Campaign Performance Over Time

Use the analytics timeline view to compare campaign performance:

  • Side-by-Side Comparison — Select two or more campaigns and compare their delivery rate, read rate, and cost per message side by side.
  • Trend Analysis — Plot metrics over time (e.g., read rate per month) to identify seasonal trends, audience fatigue, or the impact of template optimization.
  • A/B Testing — Run two versions of a campaign with different template variants, headlines, or sending times to determine which performs better. Use the comparison view to identify the statistically better variant.
💡

A/B testing on WhatsApp is most effective when you change one variable at a time. Test the header text first (highest impact on open rates), then the body content, then the CTA buttons. Running simultaneous tests with multiple variables makes it difficult to isolate the factor driving performance differences.

Using Analytics to Improve Campaigns

  1. Identify Your Best Templates — Sort templates by read rate and delivery rate. Use top-performing templates as models for creating new templates in Meta Business Manager.
  2. Optimize Sending Windows — View the “Messages Sent by Hour” chart to identify when your audience is most engaged. Schedule future campaigns during high-engagement windows.
  3. Audit Contact Quality — Export delivery logs for campaigns with low delivery rates. Cross-reference failing numbers with your CRM to flag or remove bad contacts.
  4. Track Balance Efficiency — Compare the cost per delivered message across campaigns. If one campaign has significantly higher cost per delivery (due to high failure rates), optimize the contact list before relaunching.
  5. Set Goals and Monitor — Define targets for delivery rate (> 90%), read rate (> 70%), and response rate (> 50%) based on industry benchmarks. Use the dashboard to track progress against these goals monthly.

Tips

  • Review analytics at least weekly — WhatsApp engagement patterns can shift quickly, and catching a declining read rate early lets you correct your approach before damaging your quality rating.
  • Correlate with campaign content. When you see a spike in read rate or response rate, identify which campaign produced it and replicate the pattern.
  • Monitor your plan balance alongside analytics. A sudden spike in costs without a corresponding uptick in delivered messages may indicate retry loops or configuration issues.
  • Share reports with stakeholders. Export and distribute analytics summaries to marketing, sales, and support teams so everyone understands WhatsApp channel performance.
